Disqus?

I know, I know, I have been lazy about replying to the comments lately. Part of it is the depression and schedule, but part of it is also that I miss the disqus application I had on the older format of the blog. Its a neat little application that allows me to reply back to comments instead writing another comment. However, a few people complained about the problems faced while commenting using disqus.

So here is the question: Is disqus really causing a lot of trouble, in case you are using on your blog or have used it for commenting? I am seriously considering to have it back on my blog. Does anyone have a strong opinion about that?

P.S.: I know, I know, this is my blog and I can do whatever I want with it and I don't need anyone's approval for that but I will still like to hear from you before I make this decision.

  1. I liked Disqus. PB and you had it in your blogs and it was easy for me that way because I got a notification when the author replied to my comments on the post. I prefer that.

  2. The only problem with disqus is that there's no place on the front page to type in your name, email and URL.

New users may not know that when you click "Post as Guest," you get the option to input these fields. To make matters worse, guests have to click another button in order to type in their URL - and most of us like to leave our URLs in case others want to find out more about us.

Of course, if you have a disqus account then it's no problem but new users would rather have a tooth pulled than sign up for an account before commenting.

There's another third party commenting system called "IntenseDebate" which is more user friendly. I had compared the two on my blog some time back.

Ultimately I switched back to the native wordpress comment interface since it's really the best and the third party systems were slowing me down.

But you use blogger which really sucks at allowing people to comment easily, so if I were you, I'd go with IntenseDebate or shift to wordpress since comments are such an important part of blogging...

  3. I used to use the blogger commenting system that just comes automatically with the blog (what you're using now). Recently, I started working for Disqus, and figured I might as well use it on my blog (I already had a Disqus profile for comment on other people's blogs). I have only one problem so far, a missed comment notification due to brief outages that happened to occur at the exact moment a friend was trying to comment on my little blog. No big deal; I check my moderation page every couple of days or so, I saw the missed comment and replied right there on the mod page. I also mentioned this to one of the engineers, who was quick to take note and say it's something we're working on.

SO...moral of the story: if I wasn't working for Disqus, would I have made the switch? Probably not initially, because I didn't know that I could. Once someone mentioned to me that I could use Disqus with Blogger with easy setup, I was all there (and would be, if I wasn't working for them and someone had showed me how easy it was to set up). I love being able to reply to comments via email, as well as the fact that the comments are threaded instead of just in one big list.

That's my two cents anyway :)

  4. I liked Disqus but had a few complaints and noticed that it would act up often. Finally got rid of it some weeks ago. Not happy about it but didn't know what else to do... =S I wish I knew html better to embed it rather than add the app...didn't have problems initially when you had to embed it.

  5. @ Titaxy: Me too. There are a lot of advantage of using the app so I have been thinking of reinstating that. Thanks for the vote!

@ Bhagwad: Hmm..let me try Intense debate for few days then. I am not switching to wordpress, not now at least. I like blogger, may be because they are familiar territory. Hope Intense debate works out..

@ Kim: Thanks for the input Kim. That helps!

@ PB: I know what you mean. I have been hearing a lot of complains from people about the Disqus so I am not sure if I want it back on the blog but I hate the current format of comments. As Bhagwad suggested I will try out Intense debate for few days. Let's see if that works out better.

  7. I am going to switch to Disqus because when posting comments on blogs, quite often the standard comment system on Wordpress leads to a blank page after hitting the submit button. It never happens with Disqus.
