Social Nightmare

I just saw Verizon’s latest commercial (sorry couldn’t find it on the internet yet) in which they show this family of four: Mom, dad and teenage son and daughter. Mom and dad are abusing the social network Facebook and Twitter. Mom writes ‘I love you’ on daughter’s Facebook wall while the dad keeps twittering each and every detail of his daily life on Twitter.

That reminded me of the time when I was debating the idea of inviting my mom to Orkut. I think that was just an year back. Orkut (or any social network for that matter) gives a nice platform where you can easily share photos with entire family (if you have your entire family on Orkut), write small messages and in general know about what’s going on in their lives without calling them everyday. But on the other hand they get to know how and what your friends are saying to  you. And after much deliberation of such kind I finally   invited my mom to Orkut. Plus my mom does love socializing (as opposed to my dad) and a few of her friends were already on Orkut. And obviously I didn’t want my mom to lag behind her friends just because of my personal   considerations. And honestly I haven’t regretted it, except may be once: My mom gave me a testimonial on Orkut! It’s actually a sweet testimonial but how many people do you know who “proudly”  show their parent’s testimonial (it’s more like the commercial: mom writing on daughter’s wall)? Seriously. But since I care more about my mom’s feelings than the random acquaintances, I did publish the testimonial.

The point being: I completely understand the awkwardness of situation described in the commercial. Social networks as Orkut, Facebook are still ok but I simply can’t imagine any of my folks on Twitter! That’s where I draw the line. I think that will cross the border of embarrassing. It’s definitely way beyond awkward. Imagine my mom twittering (And I don’t want to go to the replies she might get for these lines…) :

“Am worried about my daughter. She hasn’t called in weeks!”

“Daughter has upset stomach.”

“Looking for suitable matches for my daughter.”

You get the picture. It’s a horrible idea! I am so glad my mom’s internet knowledge depends on me. I can rest easy though my technology-loving mom might be able to figure out on her own too. I must be always on my guard.

FB

A friend of mine on Facebook “wonders why developers insist on naming things using acronyms. Is there an advantage to calling a file FFFPSICQP.cpp?”  :)

Facebook status

A friend of mine wants to strangle the person who invented math!

A friend of his has humbly offered to kick the said inventor in the shins while he strangles.

Please warn the inventor, if he isn't already dead.

P.S.: 1. I did my undergrad in Maths. It's my moral duty to side with the inventor. (I need to justify my stand as a lot of my friends will be more than a willing accomplice for the aforementioned strangulation).

2. This friend of mine is taking Partial Differential Equations (pdes) this quarter. The final's week starts tomorrow. I sympathize with him but can't overlook my moral obligation.

3. I have started liking the new version of Facebook, especially the 'comment on status' feature.

And they say I am heartless...

Facebook has so many weird questionnaires. You can easily spend hours on that site taking quizzes. Anyway, today I was procrastinating, as usual and hence took few quizzes. One of them was titled:

"What is LOVE to you?"

with the description saying:

You have unique insights on the definition of love. Find out what love means to you at this moment. The answer changes as you do. Do you want to know the meaning of love?

And guess what my definition of "Love" at the moment is:

[To your loved one] "I seem to have loved you in numberless forms, numberless times, in life after life, in age after age forever."

Hahahahaha Hehehehe Hawhahwhahaw ...........

I know you must be wondering what questions I answered for them to drive such a profound conclusion about me. The quiz had four questions with four options each.

Question #1 : What is your mood today?
Happy/Content/Excited
Down/Sad/Discouraged
Anxious/On edge
Idle/Neutral

Question #2 : What are you most anxious about?
Money
Family
Death
None of the above

Question #3 : How do you feel about the future?
Hopeful
Anxious
Indifferent
Prepared

Question #4 : What did you dream about last night?
I don't remember
Weird disjointed thoughts
Past experiences and people
Prepared

Do you see any connection between these questions and the statement they made? I don't. But then its stupid of me to try and find logic in these quizzes. Anyway, its lunch time, FINALLY. So I am off..

Nightmare

Made a new friend on facebook. Her status says:

S... is twittering: my nightmare: wedding day; at altar about to say 'I do'; but lisp code errors: "310 IS NOT A LIST" +> segfault that destroys the world :(.

:D :D :D

As we are talking about nightmares..I lived through one this sunday. I arranged Baby Shower for a very good friend of mine. The day started with my alarm clock breaking down in night while I was sleeping. So I got up 1.5 hrs later than I planned to, obviously in a state of panic. 15 mins into the day, I realized I need to go to the office to pick up my camera. Rushed there first, came back and started working like crazy because as usual, everyone coming for the potluck party has decided to either get dessert or drinks or cake but no substantial food (why do they do that?).

So I started cooking. Middle of making the Tava fry (after cooking 1.5 aalos (Potatoes) for an hour), I realized the instruction on the Tava Fry Masala said "NOT" to put any salt in it. Obviously I had put substantial amount of salt in it and it was inedible even though they were perfectly crisped. Threw that in the dustbin. Started the new batch. Realized that the spice is at its last stage. Can't do anything...so made whatever I could

Next came Pakoris (My friend loves those s had to make it). Moment I opened the container, I realized that I need to buy some besan! Made few pakoris from whatever besan was left in the container. By that time, guests started arriving. The first few of them have to actually clean up my living room for the party!! What a great hostess I am! Poor girls.

Finally came the cake and I realize that the decoration I have put on for her had the Baby's name spelled wrong! Cherry of the Cake!

Never thought so many things can go wrong in a single day!! Anyways, we did end up having some fun and that was the whole point, right?
