Okay I can’t hold it in anymore. It is the main reason for my decreased frequency of posts in past few days. So here it is:
After weeks of being judged and being put on the spot (which are my verbose description for interviews), okay fine I exaggerate: it has been just a week so far and only three interviews, but it feel longer, I got a job offer (I am still going for other interviews)! Yay and all that.
Okay don’t take me wrong, I am very excited and happy and relived and everything else that goes with it. But as the initial excitement is subsiding, I am realizing the next hurdle that’s staring in front of me and that’s called Salary Negotiations. I have never done that. At heart, I am still that meek Indian student who never questions authority and now I have to push my limits (it is expected of me, everyone in industry tells me). Any suggestions from anyone who has done it before?

And go for the negotiations- after all, bargaining is in desi blood- so you can definitely do it...
Negotiating does sound tough, but I guess all you need is practice :) And you are sure to get plenty of opportunity to practice like Rachna suggests, think haggling and bargaining ... maybe you should let a polite threat of "Or else I leave..." hang wherever possible :)
ReplyDeleteAlthough if you really see, you know how much you should be offered, if it's less then it does make sense to point it out. That's not negotiating that's just being honest and frank, and a little assertive :)

ReplyDeleteI'm quite bad myself at negotiations...will be trying it out as I too am in the process of job hunting. :/ If you find out what works, please let me know as well! :) Anyway, congrats once again! Really exciting news. So where is the new position based at?

ReplyDeleteI wish i was good wih bargaining...all the time I had to learn it and I neved did! Well I have to manage with whatever skills I have!
@ IHM: I am not sure I am in a position of saying "or else.." at the momen as it is the only job offer I have in this economic times, so I guess I have to be a bit more diplomatic at the moment. I still have interviews lined up though so I am still keeping my fingers crossed.

The best advice I have heard so far: Ask them how they are calculating your salary, if they are including all the factors like your work experience, your interships, your qualifications etc. And see if these factors are given the right weightage.. But always express how excited you are to get the offer and how great it will be to work with them.Though I haven't started negotiations yet...will tell you if this trick works! :)
I will be situated in Houston (the only down side of this whole charade)..but a job is a job: right?
All the best for your job hunt! Believe me, I know how hard it is and how depressing it can become: to be judged all the time, to remain positive althrough the process and then waiting to hear from them, not knowing if you did good or bad. Just keep your chin up and be positive. Everything will work out eventually! :)
